Louisa Sullivan

Louisa Sullivan

Ten years after studying Fine Art at degree level, Louisa decided to move away from painting and followed her heart towards the fascination of glass. A short course at St Martin’s College was the initiator for this passion – little did she know then that it would become her obsession and take over her working life!

As a painter, Louisa was always fascinated with light as it played on the surface of the subject and objects. This aspect takes on much more significance in the sculpture of glass: allowing light to flood through the glass, reflected and refracted, bringing the glass to life - enhancing the encased bubbles and structure of the piece as well as the texture imprinted from natural forms.

Her new pieces capture the flow of glass as seen in the cast candles, creating an organic form within. Layered, coloured glass encased within a mould and then cast for seven days, up to temperatures of 800 degrees, allowing the glass to flow, creating unique shapes within the piece. Natural organic forms can be seen in the cast leaf sculptures. In preparation, each one is modelled out of clay, concentrating on the detail form of the leaf, cast in plaster and fired. The finished result is a stunning three-dimensional leaf, showing detailed textures and veins. There is even a small copper snail hiding within the body of the leaf!

Louisa is not only renowned for cast glass but also fused glass creations. Many of her bowls are constructed from layers of glass, enamels and metal inclusions, creating unique masterpieces.

Her work, created in her Guildford studio, can be found at The Wisley Art Gallery, RHS Wisley, Surrey. She is also a member of the Contemporary Glass Society and Surrey artists Open Studios.
