This autumn The Lightbox will present the new Upper Gallery exhibition The Outside and The Inside which brings together fascinating and diverse works from two collections – ‘The Ingram Collection’ and ‘Outside In’. The Outside and The Inside (26 October 2019 – 5 January 2020) provides a unique opportunity to discover new artists and unseen work, offering fresh perspectives and a chance to question the nature of art itself.

Guest curator Marc Steene, director and founder of award-winning charity Outside In, has selected works from both collections by drawing connections between the artistic process, its source of inspiration and the expression of the artists’ inner and outer worlds. Marc said: “I want visitors to go away thinking art can come from many different places, be made for a variety of purposes and by a wider body of artists than we normally consider.”

Many of the works from The Ingram Collection come from its “Inside Out” strand of non-traditional artworks. A number of these were made by prisoners and ex-prisoners, and often examine the experience of being incarcerated. Similarly, many Outside In artists explore in their work kindred experiences, either of being committed in institutions or a strong relationship to places and spaces.

Featuring everything from rare pieces by Scottie Wilson and Madge Gill to the first display of Wilhelm Werner’s drawings in the country, The Outside and The Inside seeks to connect with the audience at a creative and emotional level.

The interpretations available in the gallery will follow the model of Outside In’s previous exhibitions, where information about the artists’ sources of inspiration, as well as details about their practices are included to provide context to help inform the viewers’ understanding of the works.

The Lightbox exhibition will be accompanied by the panel discussion, ‘Collecting Outsider Art: A Discussion’, led by Marc Steene on 14 November 2019. The panel will comprise an array of experts who will explore the issues and challenges of collecting outsider art, both practically and ethically, including its international context.

The Outside and The Inside will be on show at The Lightbox from 26 October 2019 – 5 January 2020. For further information on the exhibition and its associated event please visit thelightbox.org.uk.
